Deadline: December 1, 2025

Applications are open for the Shorenstein Postdoctoral Fellowship on Contemporary Asia 2026-2027. Each year, the Walter H. Shorenstein Asia-Pacific Research Center (Shorenstein APARC) offers two postdoctoral fellowship positions to junior scholars for research and writing on contemporary Asia. The primary research areas focus on political, economic, or social change in the Asia-Pacific region (including Northeast, Southeast, and South Asia), or on international relations and international political economy in the region. The fellowships are made possible through the generosity of APARC’s benefactor, Walter H. Shorenstein.

Appointments begin in the fall quarter of the academic year. The fellowships are limited to recent PhDs: applicants cannot be more than three years past the awarding of their doctoral degree when the fellowship starts. They must have their degree conferral and official approval/certification no later than June 30 prior to the fellowship start date (that is, no later than June 30, 2026, for 2026-27 fellowships starting in fall 2026).

  • The postdoctoral fellowship is a 10-month appointment with a salary commensurate with Stanford policy, based on the annual rate of $80,000 (to be prorated for the 10-month appointment), plus up to $3,000 for research expenses.
