Applications are open for the IFRA-Nigeria Research Grant 2026. IFRA-Nigeria – the French Institute for Research in Africa located within the Institute of African Studies, University of Ibadan – has a regional vocation that extends over ten West African countries: Nigeria, Benin, Burkina Faso, Cameroon, Gambia, Ghana, Liberia, Niger, Chad and Togo. It promotes and supports research on these countries in the field of humanities and social sciences. Disciplines outside this field are not eligible.
IFRA-Nigeria is financing, for the period of January 2026 to October 2026, about ten research projects, either individual or collective, implying fieldwork missions and/or stays in archives. The projects must be in line with the geographical area covered by IFRA-Nigeria and at least one of the four research axes of the Institute:

- Axis 1: Beliefs, bodies and health
- Axis 2: Citizenship, gender and mobilisation
- Axis 3: Heritage dynamics and environment
- Transversal axis: Digital Humanities
Grant
- IFRA-Nigeria grants can only reach a maximum of €1,000, depending on the nature and the budget of the project.
Eligibility

- Open to master’s student, doctoral students, postdoctoral and researchers working in humanities and social sciences on a country under IFRA-Nigeria’s geographical mandate (Nigeria, Cameroon, Benin, Togo, Ghana, Liberia, Gambia, Niger, Chad and Burkina Faso).
- They accept applications in French or English.
Application
List of documents to be provided:
- A letter of motivation (1 page maximum, font size = Arial 12, automatic margins and paragraph size).
- A CV (3 pages maximum).
- A budget mentioning the total cost of the project. Please note that the budget must include a detailed explanation of the intended use of fund requested from IFRA-Nigeria, and any other amount requested to or received from other sources of funding. Use the template provided.
- A detailed description of the research project not exceeding 4 pages (bibliography and budget excluded). It should include the scientific project, a detailed work plan (dates, itinerary, objectives, etc.), the list of institutional partnerships, the perspectives of valorisation and a bibliography. Use the template provided.
Applications must be in the form of a single .pdf file containing all the requested documents above.
